Asphalt composite roofing shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials in today’s market, and with good reason. They’re affordable and available in different styles, colors and textures, so they’re suitable for any type of home. Keeter Roofing & Remodeling installs composite roofs on homes in Wichita and the surrounding area.

What is Composite Roofing?

As the name implies, composite roofing is made from a mixture of roofing materials such as asphalt, fiberglass and recycled plastic or paper products, among others. Typically referred to as asphalt shingles, composition roofing is one of the most commonly used products.

Organic composition shingles became popular in the U.S. during the 1920s, primarily because they were easy to install and inexpensive. Made with paper, felt or wood pulp and coated with asphalt and ceramic granules, these older shingles didn’t resist fire or hold up to the elements very well.

Today’s composition shingles consist of layers including asphalt, granules, fiberglass, a sealant and a back surfacing. They’re also fire-resistant and durable.

Benefits of Composite Roofs

There are many reasons homeowners choose to have new or replacement composite roofs installed. One of the primary benefits is that asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing type. They’re also available in a wide variety of colors, styles and textures. Since individual shingles can be replaced, asphalt shingle roofs are easier and less expensive to repair.

Composite shingles can even offer the look of wood shakes, clay tiles or a slate roof. This means you can have the style you want with better durability at a lower cost.

Composite Roof Types

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of shingle installed on residential homes. They’re a preferred option because of their cost and durability in a wide variety of weather conditions. The average lifespan of asphalt shingles is 20 years, but damage from storms and hail can shorten this. Here in Wichita, Kansas, hail damage is a common occurrence, so it’s important to choose a durable asphalt shingle.

3-Tab Asphalt Shingles
The least expensive, though least durable option, of asphalt shingles are 3-tab asphalt shingles. As they are only rated to withstand 60-70 MPH winds, this type of shingle is not advisable for homes in Kansas due to the risk of storm damage.

Architectural and Premium Asphalt Shingles
In contrast, architectural and premium asphalt shingles are thicker and much more durable. They’re better rated for much higher wind speeds, so they’re more suitable for areas prone to severe weather. These types of roofs can last up to 25 years.
